Will it snow this winter?

During the year I have received several messages through this blog, all have been interesting. Thank you. Several messages were interested in Dorset Police and these contacts I have passed on to Ian who hopes to be bringing you a history of the Dorset Police force and the Policemen who walked our streets, in 2018. Other messages were members of the Beck or House family, I have loved meeting you on line and hopefully in person in 2018. Wishing all my readers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Sylvia Photo of May taken at Blandford Police Station most likely during WW1

The Wayman’s of Corfe Mullen

A while ago I asked Who are these people? about a photograph including some of my Grandmother’s family.  Sorting through the photograph albums I have found more photographs taken at the same time.  Some of these are in front of a house, looking at one of them in detail I can make a good guess as to the question of where the photograph was taken and, therefore, who the people are.

Where was the photograph taken?

The answer to this question is possible because the owner of the house has very kindly put his name on the house wall. Thank you to Jim (cousin-in-law) for spotting this.

Thank you Mr Wayman for advertising for your building business on your house.  The sign says E. W. Wayman & Sons Builders.  Little did Ernest know when he put this sign up that 90 years later it would be so helpful. The Wayman family  lived at Tower House, Pine Road, Corfe Mullen (From Ernest and his wife Minnie's entries at burials in Corfe Mullen Parish Council Cemetery).  Now we know the most likely place for this photograph, from Google maps the house is still recognisable at this address.  In my previous post I hadn't considered Corfe Mullen as being a location. Knowing where the photograph was taken has given me some clues to the identify of these people.

When was the photograph taken?

As these photographs includes Rebecca Beck who died in 1928, this photograph must have been taken before that.  May and Fred House married in 1925.  We don't know how long they were courting before the wedding.  In the previous post I estimated a date of between 1923-25 from the fashions. I think this is still the best guess for the date.

There is no clues as to the reason for the photograph, it could have just been a visit, perhaps to pick up Jo or take her home after a visit to Beaminster where the Beck family lived at this time.  The photographs look as though they were taken on the same day at two separate times, due to the location and May Beck has taken off her coat in the last photograph. Perhaps someone had a new camera they wanted to try out.

Family Friends?

The Wayman family are important to Grandad Beck's story because his second wife, Jo (Annie) was one of Ernest's daughters, I wrote about their marriage last week.  These photographs included Grandad Beck's first wife, Rebecca.  What I hadn't realised that it looks like it wasn't just Jo and May (Grandad Beck's second wife and daughter) who where friends but the two families. In the top photograph Rebecca has her arm around one of the youngest Wayman girls suggesting that there is an element of affection between them.  The photographs also include Eli, Grandad Beck's father, the bearded gentleman who lived in Poole.

I have concluded the most likely identify of the people in the photograph, listed below with the approximate age they would have been in 1925 as:
Back row (Left to right), Eleanor Wayman (22); Margaret Wayman (20); Eli Beck (73) Grandad Beck (50); I will come back to the lady in the flower hat; Ernest (Father) Wayman (53); Annie (known as Jo) Wayman (24); Stanley Wayman (23); May Beck/House (24); Ernest (Son) Wayman (32); Fredrick House (36);

Front row seated Minnie Wayman (58); Rebecca Beck (64). The two girls: Jessie (18) and Bertha (16) Wayman sitting on the grass. The women in the flowery hat is likely to be Emma Wayman (84) Ernest Wayman mother.

This leaves 4 Wayman siblings, Rose (30), Kathleen ( 26), Daisy (38) and Frank (39).  Kathleen may be one of the girls on the left,  she never married and is also buried at Corfe Mullen Cemetery. Frank may be the gentleman on the right of the photograph below. I wonder if he took the other photographs which is why he only appears in this one. We know Grandad Beck was a keen photographer and is another option for the photographer, he only appears in a two of the eight photographs.

I hope you have enjoyed these photographs and please let me know if you disagree with any of my "guesses" or have some of your own to offer. I would love to hear from any of the Wayman descendants.

  1. I think you are correct with date parameters judging by the fashions. They are lovely photos.

  2. Thank you Heather, it was exciting finding the sign on the house as it explain the photo. Once I had this information all the people fitted really well. I was surprised at how many versions there were and lots of duplicates, which confused me.

  4. Michelle,
Thank you for your comment. It is lovely to hear from people who have found my blog. As the Wayman family are only connected to the Beck's though my Great Grandfather's second marriage to Aunty Jo Wayman, I know very little about them, beyond the photographs above. I will email you, with something that may help.
    Happy New Year Sylvia

  5. Hi, I've just come across your website whilst I was searching for information on the short length of footpath known as Wayman's Way that runs beside the now disused railway near to Pine Road in Corfe Mullen. It was apparently named after Charles Wayman (1927-2003) who, the sign says owned the land. Just wondered if there is a connection and if so, who was Charles Wayman? I live not far away and I walk that area a lot.

  6. Sorry, I don't know anything about this. My connection to the Wayman's and Corfe Mullen is through marriage. I hope you find the answer.

  7. Hi there :-)
I came across your blog when I was researching the history of our house. Our home - 104 Wimborne Road, Corfe Mullen ( which sides on to Pine Road) belonged to Charles Wayman. I have a photo of him if you are interested, and another photo of a lady stood outside of our house, back in the 50s/60s. Please do contact me by email if you would like me to send them to you.

  8. Hi :-) Charles Wayman used to live at our home - 104 Wimborne Road - the semi-detached house that sides on to Pine Road. I believe he was well known in the local area. We also enjoy the disused railway walk named after him and would like to learn more about him.

  9. Thank you, Victoria for your comments. I didn't know that Charles Wayman lived on the corner I am assuming before he built Tower House. My connection to the Wayman's is though our Step-Great Grandmother Aunty Jo, therefore, I know very little about the family or Corfe Mullen.
